Recessed doorways should, where possible, be avoided as they provide opportunities for crime and anti-social behaviour i.e. graffiti, arson and burglary. In the event that the building design or location requires such recesses efforts should be made minimize such negative consequences. This may include a requirement for higher security rated doorsets, doorsets and surrounding building material to be fire retardant and anti-graffiti surface treatments to be applied to both.

The heavily recessed entrance reduces surveillance, provides opportunity for attempts at criminal entry and provides space to hide or loiter for anti-social purposes.

Doorways are recessed no more than 600mm.

Where crime risk is considered heightened roller shutters may be used out of hours. Such installed shutters must be certificated to STS 202 BR2 or LPS 1175 SR2.
