Waste containers can either be located inside buildings and externally accessed via secure bin store doors, or in purpose made secure steel bin stores located away from the building. This reduces opportunities for climbing and for the contents to be used to start fires.

Waste containers on wheels stored externally, have lockable lids and are securely tethered away from the buildings.

For site specific advice on standoff distances (fire protection and counter terrorism measures) consult the appropriate fire authority and police Counter Terrorism Security Advisor. There is adequate secure provision for temporary storage of materials that are set aside for recycling.

Bin stores for kitchen waste should be located in a similar way, although it is accepted that for convenience during business hours the bin(s) may be kept outside and close to the kitchen areas.

Insecure waste containers sited adjacent to buildings increase danger of arson and anti social behaviour and could be used as a climbing aid to upper levels. Uncontrolled access and lack of parking demarcation in void area at rear can lead to itinerant parking, dumping vehicles and evening congregation.
