An interactive guide providing key examples of Secured by Design guidance on designing out crime
This toolkit will help explore the principles of designing-out crime within a fictional residential and commercial development, the development illustrates poorly designed features and more secure alternative solutions. A series of scenarios, including the layout of communal spaces, use of lighting, access and landscape planting, highlight the design decisions that would increase the risk of crime and anti-social behaviour. It also details the relevant and current standards required by Secured by Design.
The toolkit is intended to complement the Secured by Design Principles and Design Guides which should be referred to for additional guidance. These can be found here.
The requirements and recommendations within the toolkit are based upon verified research and have been proven to achieve a reduction in crime risk of up to 60%. Secured by Design are continually examining security standards reflecting trends in crime and new research.
Secured by Design is a flagship UK police initiative to help ‘design out’ crime through the use of high-quality innovative products and processes.
