Academy delivers at RTPI Planning and Design Hybrid Seminar

The Police Crime Prevention Academy has been supporting the South West Regional meeting of the Royal Town Planning Institute with the continuing professional development (CPD) of their staff.

The Academy’s Mark O’Callaghan delivered a presentation on ‘Design vs crime’ as part of a Planning and Design Hybrid Seminar held at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium. The focus of the day was on the challenges of building well-designed places, the skills planners and architects need in assessing and creating well-designed, secure buildings and whether character and appearance is all that matters.

The Academy’s National Manager Amanda Mulholland, said: “The Academy was delighted to be invited to work with the RTPI, working in association with RIBA South, for this CPD seminar. The design of the built environment plays a significant part in reducing crime and disorder whilst also contributing greatly to removing the fear of crime.

“Local authority planning has a profound impact on crime prevention by shaping the built environment and fostering community engagement, influencing not only the physical layout of urban and rural spaces but also the social dynamics within them. The interplay between planning and crime prevention is vital for sustainable urban development, making it imperative for local authorities to adopt a proactive and comprehensive approach”.
