Adam Harcombe: From Recovery to Success with Vision Products

Secured by Design member company Vision Products shared the story of their successful traineeship programme, and how it supported the recovery of one of their team members following an injury.

Former rugby player from Trealaw, Adam Harcombe, became a local legend due to his incredible journey of recovery and resilience following a life-changing incident in 2020. Brutally attacked and left for dead on a roadside, Adam suffered a severe head injury and fell into a prolonged coma. Despite the prognosis, Adam’s determination and strength together with the unwavering support of his family, friends and community, played a crucial role in his recovery.

Upon waking from the coma, Adam faced numerous physical and mental challenges, having to relearn basic skills and requiring assistance with everyday activities. However, his tough spirit shone through as he gradually regained his strength and independence. Adam’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and community support.

In addition to his remarkable recovery, Adam has recently excelled in athletics. This year, he won two medals in shot put, an incredible achievement that has not only brought him personal satisfaction but has also inspired the entire community. Adam was featured in a BBC documentary released in August this year called ‘Saving Lives in Cardiff’.

In April 2024, Adam joined Vision Products as a volunteer, assisting with the manufacture of windows. Adam has since secured a traineeship position where he is learning new skills, such as welding windows. These traineeships are specifically designed to support individuals with disabilities, providing them with meaningful work experience.

Vision Products is a supported business which is part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and is dedicated to providing support, training, and employment opportunities for disabled people. They offer a diverse range of products and services, including daily living aids, mobility products, and high-quality PVCu windows and doors. Vision Products’ mission is to make a positive impact in the community by empowering individuals and promoting inclusivity.

Reflecting on his recovery, Adam said: “I am grateful to Vision Products for believing in me and believing is achieving. I now have faith to do things again because my mental health did skyrocket when I was out of work and being in work has changed this.

“I am now more focused with everyday life and have become more involved in sports which is my passion.  I have learned new things, and my CV has grown which will continue whilst working here.  Being part of a team and being with work colleagues has reignited the old me again.

“I feel normal because I work with others who have a disability, and it is just the norm here.  I would recommend working here to anyone especially for people coming out of school or college who has a disability.”

Adam’s inspiring story is highlighted in a video interview exploring his involvement with Vision Products.

Cllr. Gareth Caple, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, including Vision Products, said: “Adam’s story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of providing opportunities for everyone, regardless of their circumstances.

“We at RCT Council are incredibly proud to have Adam as part of our traineeship scheme at Vision Products. Ever since joining us as a volunteer, Adam has continued to show grit, resilience, and determination in everything that he does.

“I look forward to seeing how Adam progresses further within his role, while continuing to overcome life’s many challenges. Adam is an inspiration to us all.”

Vision Products continues to make a positive impact in the community by empowering individuals and promoting inclusivity.
