“Being Secured by Design accredited is incredibly important to us”

UAP / Fullex has renewed its membership with Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.

UAP started in 1996 as Universal Imports, importing door knockers – and it was that from which UAP was born as a leading UK supplier and distributor of decorative door hardware, specialist locksmith tools and security products.

As a company UAP has grown to include over 3000 product lines and export to more than 25 different countries.

Fullex’s early history was as an aluminium window and patio door manufacturer, serving mainly the commercial market. In 1980 Fullex launched their own multipoint Patio door lock, laying the foundations for decades of successful product development.

Fullex launched the first UK manufactured multipoint locking system in 1986 and this was quickly followed to market by the highly regarded SL16 Multibolt, which was one of the leading locks of the late 1980’s and early 90’s and has also gained wide acceptance in the very demanding American door market.

The Crimebeater composite door lock, launched in 2002, is one of the most widely specified locks in the local authority and social housing sector. Building on the success of Crimebeater, Fullex launched the Crimebeater Mid Lock, incorporating a 5 lever midlock system which ‘double locks’ the lock to counter the dual threats of cylinder snapping and ‘lock bumping’.

The most recent addition to the lock range, the XL 3 hook multipoint lock, continues the tradition of reliability and security set by its predecessors and is both PAS24 capable and Secured by Design accredited.

In 2017 Fullex was taken over by UAP. As a leading UK supplier of innovative door hardware and security products, this allowed Fullex to offer a wider product range. SBD Development Officer Hazel Goss said: “UAP / Fullex are one of our larger companies and it has been an absolute joy to work alongside them as they have made me feel very welcome since I took over as the areas Development Officer. I have been amazed at what they do especially the 3D printing and really looking forward to working with them for many years to come”.

Mark Rushton, quality and certification director, UAP / Fullex said: “Being Secured by Design accredited is incredibly important to us. In fact, Fullex was the very first registration with SBD and we are have enormous pride in that.

"Our customers gain confidence in knowing that our products are third party accredited, that they’re thoroughly tested and up to the SBD standard which is vital for an ever-changing industry.”

SBD is a police-owned organisation that works on behalf of the Police Service throughout the UK to deliver a wide range of crime prevention and demand reduction initiatives.

SBD plays a significant crime prevention role in the planning process to design out crime in a wide range of building sectors. It has achieved some significant success including one million homes built to SBD standards with reductions in crime of up to 87%.

SBD have many partner organisations, ranging from the Home Office, Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government and the Police Service through to local authorities, housing associations, developers and manufacturers and work closely with standards and certification bodies to ensure that their publicly available standards actually meet the needs of the police and public alike.

Products must be subjected to vigorous testing and auditing by an accredited third party organisation before being allowed to carry the SBD logo – this is the only way for companies to obtain police accreditation for security related products in the UK.
