GK Joinery joins the dots for added security with Secured by Design

Established 40 years ago, the company began in a humble workshop with the simple mission of producing quality timber products. Over the years GK Joinery has built its reputation on customer recommendations due to its excellent craftsmanship and outstanding customer service. 

Today the original workshop at GK Joinery has evolved into a modern facility equipped with the latest technology and tooling, and a large showroom open to the public. Even though modern precision engineering has replaced the hammer and chisel, the company still stays true to the traditional craftsmanship that has defined the business for generations.

The joinery company specialises in creating bespoke quality windows, doors, conservatories and staircases for private residents and larger scale developments. Sustainability and the environment also play an important role and GK Joinery are committed to sourcing timber from FSC -certified suppliers, and for every product made, a tree is planted through the Just One Tree Initiative, supporting global reforestation to help combat climate change. They are also a member of the Joinery Network, a cooperative of specialist companies in the UK that bring expertise, support and certified products to the timber window and door business.

Secured by Design (SBD) is owned by the UK Police Service with the specific aim of reducing crime and increasing safety for businesses and individuals.

SBD seeks to improve the physical security of buildings and the surrounding area using products such as doors, windows, locks and walling systems along with fencing systems that meet the SBD Police Preferred Specification security requirements.

SBD have many partner organisations, ranging from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government through to local authorities, housing associations, developers and manufacturers and work closely with standards and certification bodies.

SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for security-related products in the UK, through the Police Preferred Specification - a product-based accreditation scheme developed 25 years ago, which provides a recognised standard for all security products that effectively deter and reduce crime. SBD work with manufacturers and standards authorities to ensure that security standards are current and updated to keep pace with emerging crime trends.
