Motorcycle tracking system company BikeTrac helps recover 750 bikes and receives accreditation from Secured by Design

BikeTrac, a company behind one of the UK’s most successful motorcycle tracking devices, has had its state-of-the-art tracking system and robust security equipment accredited by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.

Its GPS, GPRS and RF technology has helped recover more than 750 bikes over the last eight years with it not being uncommon for bikes to be recovered in less than 30 minutes.

BikeTrac was the first motorcycle-specific tracker in the market to achieve Thatcham’s Technical Quality Assurance Cat 6 and Cat 7 ratings. The Cat 6 standard has been more widely achieved by companies with GPS based systems, but BikeTrac went further to secure Thatcham’s coveted Cat 7 standard rating for incorporating radio frequency.

It’s reach extends into lock-ups and garages and underground parking as well as inside vans and shipping containers.

Tracking systems act as a homing devices to monitor the movements of a bike in real time providing journey history and alerts of unauthorised use. They are recognised as an important tool in the fight against the rise in thefts of motorcycles – from scooters to high-powered superbikes – in many cities across the country. In London, stolen motorcycles have gone on to be used to carry out violent crime and street robberies.

SBD has accredited two other BikeTrac products: its chain and lock /disc lock; and ground anchor – both certified to Thatcham Cat 3 standard. It’s chain weighs four kilos. BikeTrac has also produced a ‘grab bag’ to contain the chain and lock which can be housed on the pillion seat. Their ground anchor also comes with a drill bit, bolts and fixing materials to secure it to the ground.

BikeTrac is based at the Innovation Centre at Silverstone, the home of British motor racing in Northants.

Their Sales and Marketing Director, Bill Taylor, said: “To have recognition by Secured by Design is important – helping us to work in partnership to increase awareness among owners of measures to their bikes from theft, make it more difficult for thieves to steal bikes and to give police every chance of catching those responsible and bringing them before the Courts.”

SBD Development Officer, Doug Skins, commented: “We are thrilled BikeTrac has joined us to work towards reducing motorcycle thefts. We look forward to working with BikeTrac to help the police deal with the growing number of thefts of high powered bikes around the country and particularly in London.”
