North West Cambridge Development

The national police crime prevention initiative, Secured by Design (SBD), is proud to be working with the University of Cambridge to influence the security design of the University's new development adjacent to the M11 and close to the City of Cambridge.

Known as the North West Cambridge Development, its purpose is to provide affordable accommodation for the rising numbers of University and College staff as well as post graduate students' accommodation in a new district to enhance both the City and the University.

Since the granting of outline planning consent in February 2013, SBD has been liaising with the University's team of architects and developers as well as local authority planning officers to ensure that it will be a safe environment for its visitors and residents.

The first accommodation for 700 University and College staff and 325 post graduate students is due to become available in 2017.

Over the coming 15-20 years, the 150 hectare development will become an increasingly mixed academic and urban community and home to around 8,500 people with 1,500 homes for University staff, accommodation for 2,000 post graduates and 1,500 private houses for sale.

The development will feature a wide range of community facilities including a hotel, community centre, health centre, care home, supermarket and local shops. A primary school – called the University of Cambridge Primary School – has opened already.

SBD Development Officer Doug Skins said: "This is very much an ongoing partnership between our design officers, the University and those companies working on the University's behalf to create this exciting development not only in terms of ideas but also in terms of practical implementation. Our aim is to achieve a welcoming and safe environment to support this new district."

Police Crime Prevention Initiatives, which runs Secured by Design, on behalf of the Police Service in the UK, has a national network of Designing Out Crime Officers, Architectural Liaison Officers or equivalent who work with architects, developers and builders to incorporate proven crime prevention design techniques into the built environment and security of buildings.
