Queen’s Award 2020 winner Clark Door joins Secured by Design

Specialists in high-performance door solutions, Clark Door, of Carlisle, Cumbria, exports to more than 45 countries worldwide and has achieved year-on-year growth in exports for more than ten years.

The company, which can trace its roots back to the USA in the 1880s, believes it gained the award for its commitment to international markets after working on new and innovative doors for some of the world’s most prestigious building projects with some of the world’s most eminent architects.

Clark Door’s projects are extensive. Internationally, they include:

Clark Door designed, manufactured and installed two large acoustic doors at Whitechapel Station, London, as part of the capital’s ambitious new Crossrail service. The doors are found in the station’s new Durward Street ventilation shaft where they provide a high level of sound insulation to prevent noise from the shaft’s ventilation fans from reaching the station above as well as being fire rated to 60 minutes and capable of withstanding a high air pressure load in either direction. The doors measure 4.8m wide by 7.2m high, and 6m wide by 8m high respectively, with the largest door weighing in excess of ten tonnes. Clark Door was awarded a quality award for this project by the Crossrail main contractor BBMV.

Clark Door in its original form moved to Carlisle in 1973. Following a management acquisition of the UK company in 1991, Clark Door became a family business, providing high performance specialist door solutions including acoustic, fire resistant, temperature controlled, security and industrial doors.

Clark Door’s Managing Director, Andrew Ashley, said the company was proud to have won the Queen’s Award for International Trade, which was announced on 21 April, the Queen’s Birthday.

Andrew commented: “Working across the globe with products that push the boundaries technically can be a challenge with the need to meet local standards. Our engineering team has risen to these challenges and work extremely hard to provide high performance door solutions to prestigious projects around the world.”

Clark Door’s Chairman, Paul Ashley, received an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List of 2011 for services to manufacturing in Cumbria. Both Andrew and Paul are qualified engineers.

As a door supplier and service provider to numerous UK nuclear licensed sites, Clark Door is a key supplier to the nuclear industry. Its team is experienced in the strict requirements for design, quality and safe working practices demanded by this industry.

The company has developed a range of high specification industrial doors that are capable of withstanding the harsh environments that these applications require, with high levels of air permeability, thermo insulation, and wind rating, in addition to longevity, and security.

Door security is paramount in multiple applications including military and government facilities, museums, panic rooms, protected spaces, police and custodial services, utilities and manufacturing. This led Clark Door to develop three high specification security shutters to LPS 1175 Issue 8, Security Rating (SR) 3, 4 and 5 respectively and a range of doors to LPS 1056 Issue 6. These products have been accredited by Secured by Design for achieving its Police Preferred Specification standard.
