SBD member company BikeAway granted UK patent

The patent gives BikeAway intellectual protection for the design and manufacture of the BikeAway range of cycle lockers, the unique design of which gives superior physical security and resilience to attack.

The latest patent directly relates to both the innovative securing mechanism used by the cycle storage locker’s door and the methods used in their manufacture to reinforce seams and panels. These features combine to allow the locker to successfully overcome attacks from thieves using crowbars in an attempt to force the lock or jemmy open the door to reach the bike.

As well as being a Secured by design accredited product, the BikeAway Warrior locker has been awarded “Sold Secure Bicycle Gold” because of its ability to shrug of attack because of its patented features.

The BikeAway locker is a galvanised steel cycle locker which stores one bike in a vertical position. Their space saving design allows 12 BikeAways to fit into one standard car parking space. The lockers are suitable for most locations and have been installed in colleges, hospitals and business establishments along with railway stations and by housing associations and local authorities.

Secured by Design (SBD) is a police-owned organisation that works on behalf of the Police Service throughout the UK to deliver a wide range of crime prevention and demand reduction initiatives.

Products must be subjected to vigorous testing and auditing by an accredited third party organisation before being allowed to carry the SBD logo – this is the only way for companies to obtain police accreditation for security related products in the UK.
