Solon adds hugely popular Video Doorbell to SBD product list – will showcase at ATLAS24

Secured by Design member company Solon Security have announced a groundbreaking addition to an ever-growing SBD product range by confirming their very own Video Doorbell has achieved approval under the Secured Connected Device (SCD) accreditation.

The impressive achievement was secured following an intensive independent audit by Secarma Ltd of both the device and associated app through IASME’s IoT Cyber Assurance Level Two standard, IASME’s highest level of certification.

The IASME IoT Cyber Assurance Scheme is tested and certified against all 13 provisions of the internationally recognised ETSI EN 303 645 standard. Certification demonstrates that the product meets the leading global technical standard in IoT security and is fully compliant with the UK’s Product Security & Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2022.

Solon’s General Manager, David Simpson, said: “Smart products generate understandable concern around data security, privacy and cyber-attacks, especially when cheap imports flood the market.

“We wanted to assure users that with our video doorbell, they are the only ones watching, so we are delighted that the device and its operating system passed such a robust test by IASME at the first time of asking.

“It is testament to our continuous product development that we have our very first ‘SCD’ item on our SBD list. We are also proud to continue our policy of only submitting the highest quality products for SBD accreditation”.

The Video Doorbell, which will be added to Solon’s premium DEFENDER brand to celebrate the news, is a HD doorbell camera with rechargeable long-life battery. Users can talk to visitors and detect intruders via the dedicated app, which stores activity without the need for a paid cloud subscription. Detection areas can also be customised in the app to remove other properties or public spaces. Each unit comes with a 32GB SD Card for recording backup, a plug-in chime, two mounting brackets and multiple security screws. All provided as one kit, for one price.

David Simpson continued: “The product has already been a huge hit with police forces over the past two years through Safer Streets, Home Office referrals and other campaigns. The features meet and exceed big name alternatives, whilst the price point, SD card inclusion and no-cloud-sign-up requirement were truly developed with our customers and their end users in mind.

“Now we add the SBD accreditation, which I see as the final piece of the puzzle that genuinely makes this the best video doorbell on the market. Smart security products are here to stay and our commitment to them is real, so our customers can stay tuned for further exciting updates in this area”.

“But as always we never forget our belt and braces in security, so at ATLAS will also be debuting a new range of SBD accredited stand-alone home alarms focused on forced entry and target hardening.”

Michelle Kradolfer, the SBD National Manager, said: “I am delighted that the Solon Security’s Video Doorbell has achieved the Secure Connected Device accreditation, achieving the required standard for both its physical and cyber security attributes. With the rise in IoT and smart devices being sold in the UK market, and the government mandating compliance with the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2022 by 29th April 2024, it is essential for companies to ensure IoT products are built securely to protect their consumers.

“Obtaining the Secure Connected Device accreditation builds confidence and trust in products and we hope that other companies within the industry and beyond will take note of this achievement and follow in their footsteps in producing safe IoT products for the UK market.”

How can SBD’s Secure Connected Device accreditation help with compliance with the government legislation?

Secured by Design’s (SBD) Secure Connected Device accreditation scheme, developed in consultation with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), helps companies to get their products appropriately assessed against all 13 provisions of the ETSI EN 303 645 standard, a requirement that goes beyond the Government’s legislation so that companies can not only demonstrate their compliance with the legislation but help protect themselves, their products and customers.

The SBD Secure Connected Device IoT Assessment identifies the level of risk associated with an IoT device and its ecosystem, providing recommendations on the appropriate certification routes with one of the SBD approved certification bodies. Once third-party testing and independent certification for a product has been achieved, the company can apply to become SBD members, with the product receiving the SBD’s Secure Connected Device accreditation, a unique and recognisable accreditation that will highlight products as having achieved the relevant IoT standards and certification.

Compliance with the Secure Connected Device accreditation sends a clear message to the wider industry of the importance of IoT security and companies accredited to this SBD standard will lead by example and be at the forefront of the IoT revolution and in doing so will help to keep their customers and the public safer from the risk of a cyber breach.

The Secure Connected Device accreditation is the only way for companies to obtain police recognition for the security of their IoT products in the UK.
