This week is National Gardening Week and what better time than now to think about the security of your garden?
When people consider outside property security, gardens are very often overlooked. However, they can be a prime target for opportunist thieves. Secured by Design (SBD), the official national police crime prevention initiative, has worked with Capel Manor College’s School of Garden Design and Plantsmanship to create a garden which showcases the principles of designing out crime in the garden environment.
The garden features a mock ‘eco home’ facade, incorporating today’s themes in housebuilding to give the garden context, a wildlife pond to encourage biodiversity, a green roof on the shed, a compost area and points for electric car charging, with a dense surround of thorny hedging that has been planted to make access difficult for intruders.
With over 60 gardens and landscapes to explore, why not pop along to Capel Manor Gardens in Enfield this week and have a look at the SBD garden to see how beauty, nature and security can co-exist.
Capel Manor Gardens are open daily between 10am and 5.30pm, with last tickets at 4pm.
Whilst police are unable to recommend specific products, SBD can act as an effective gatekeeper and signposting service to our 650 member companies and their products, which meet our rigorous Police Preferred Specification standards. Members’ products range from secure and robust doors, windows and locks through to cutting-edge IT products, CCTV components, and shutters and barriers. SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police accreditation for security products in the UK.
Secured by Design is a national police crime prevention initiative. It seeks to achieve sustainable reductions in crime through design and other approaches to help people live in a safer society.
