Austrian lock specialists EVVA join SBD
Austrian locking technology specialist EVVA has joined Secured by Design (SBD), the UK’s police crime prevention initiative, which seeks to improve building security to reduce crime.
SBD has accredited six of the company’s Euro Profile cylinder locks – all BSI Kitemark certified: 3KSplus, EPS and MCS.
SBD homes on schoolsite milestone
A 150-home development on a former school site in Epping was the first time that Essex Police and officials from Epping Forest District Council had got together in a formal way to incorporate crime prevention measures into the landscaping and layout, and physical security of properties, on a new build estate.
Consultations about St John’s Senior School selling part of its large grounds to housing developers had been going on between the Council, school authorities and developers since the early 2000s.
Ring home technology accredited by Secured by Design
Ring, the leader in outdoor home security, today announced it has received accreditation by national police crime prevention initiative Secured by Design (SBD) for two of its innovative, camera-based home security products designed to reduce crime and keep neighbourhoods safe by protecting vulnerable residents from unknown and unexpected doorstep callers.
Ring Video Doorbell and Ring Stick Up Cam have attained SBD’s Police Preferred Specification after being accredited by a technical panel comprising a number of security industry experts. Ring is the first company to have a smart doorbell system accredited by SBD.
Exova opens new supersite testing laboratory
Exova, the global testing, calibration and advisory service provider, launched its new testing laboratory supersite at Wednesbury, West Midlands, on Tuesday 6 June.
Special guests and industry representatives were invited to take part in a tour around the new 50,000 square foot testing facility, which brings together facilities from three separate sites into one single location, with the move having been successfully completed on time and within budget.
The LHC launches agreement for secure communal entrance doorsets
The LHC, a major provider of purchasing arrangements to help publicly funded organisations involved in the construction, refurbishment and maintenance of social housing and public buildings, has launched its first ever agreement for Communal Entrance Doorsets with the full support and involvement of Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.
The launch of the Communal Entrance Doorsets framework agreement marks a significant milestone for SBD because it is the first time SBD has been involved in the formulation of a framework agreement with the LHC.
Mighton products strengthen security credentials on a wide range of products
Mighton Products has achieved PAS24 and Secured by Design accreditation for a range of the company’s specialist vertical sliding sash hardware products for timber windows. Mighton undertook compliance with these key standards to further improve the quality and performance of the products it supplies for use with traditional sash frames.
Cyclepods open new hub at Leyton
Secured by Design (SBD) member company Cyclepods has launched its biggest and most secure cycle hub in the London Borough of Waltham Forest just a few metres from busy Leyton Underground Station.
It is the first cyclehub that SBD has registered under its increasingly popular National Building Approval scheme, which streamlines and simplifies the process for developers to enable buildings to achieve Police Preferred Specification standards of security.
Metador Joins Secured by Design

SBD programme airs at the Police Federation Conference
A film showing how Secured by Design (SBD), the national crime prevention initiative, is working with Police Forces and other organisations around the country to reduce crime, was shown as part of the Police Federation of England and Wales' annual conference this week.
The four-minute film was included in a specially-made series of programmes collectively called Above and Beyond produced by the Police Federation of England & Wales in partnership with ITN Productions, ITN's bespoke production hub, and is introduced by national newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky.

The carbon footprint of crime has fallen, study finds
A study led by an Engineering Doctorate student at the University of Surrey has found that the carbon footprint of crime over the last 20 years has fallen.
The study, published in the British Journal of Criminology, applied estimates of the carbon footprint of criminal offences to police-recorded crime and self-reported victimisation survey data, to estimate the carbon footprint of crime in England and Wales between 1995 and 2015.
SBD Products Foil Burglary Attempts In Hertfordshire
Burglars failed to smash their way into three houses protected by robust security standards set by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, police staff in Hertfordshire reported this week.
SBD, a crime prevention initiative operated by the Police Service across the UK, seeks to reduce crime by combining minimum standards of physical security like doors, windows and locks that achieve SBD's Police Preferred Specification standard and proven design principles of the built environment such as natural surveillance and defensible space.
