SBD gives advice as National Cycle Crime Survey reveals 50% of cyclists have had a bike stolen
The importance of having good security for your bicycle has been highlighted by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, following the release of the 2017 National Cycle Crime Survey, on Thursday, 14 September.
Commissioned by BikeRegister, the national cycle database, the survey of nearly 1,400 cyclists across the UK, found that 50% of the cyclists who took part have had a bike stolen, and of those 43% have had two bikes or more stolen.
Bikes were stolen mostly from the home (61%) often from a shed or garage, outside shops (18%) and outside work (11.5%).

Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, sponsored the ‘Best Community and Neighbourhood Initiative’ - one of more than 20 Service Awards - presented during the Association for Public Excellence (APSE) Conference in Oxford on Thursday, 7 September.
SBD’s Senior Development Officer, Mick Reynolds, was on stage when the award was presented to Swale Borough Council for a scheme to encourage dog walkers to pick up after their pets.
3,000 Kingdom Housing Association homes in Fife built to SBD standards have 87% fewer crimes, say Police Scotland
A Police Scotland study has found that 3,000 homes built to nationally recognised police crime prevention standards in more than 150 Kingdom Housing Association (KHA) developments in Fife experienced 87% fewer reported crimes compared to properties not similarly designed and protected.
The findings were produced with the support of Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, which has 200 officers and staff attached to Police Forces around the UK to ‘design out crime’.
Zero crime and anti-social behaviour at two primary schools since they were built to Secured by Design standards
Two co-located newly built primary schools, which were designed to incorporate proven police crime prevention techniques into the layout of the site and into the physical security of its buildings, have been heralded a major success by Police Scotland.
The Aitkenbar and St Peter’s Primary Schools, which are part of the new Bellsmyre Education Campus near Dumbarton, opened their doors in November 2016.
Secured by Design and Secured Environments: working together to protect people and places
Businesses can now protect the physical security of their premises as well as their staff and work processes through a single organisation – Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (Police CPI).
Police CPI brings together Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, which seeks to ‘design out crime’ through the layout and landscaping and physical security of buildings, and Secured Environments (SE), a police certification scheme, which focuses on protecting people from crime in the workplace and in many other types of buildings.

How 'WATCHU' can help you keep track of your loved ones whilst they are away from home
A watch which also functions as a phone and location tracking device so parents know where their children are playing, is one of the latest products to be accredited by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.
Called WATCHU, it provides a link between the GPS Smart Watch, which is aimed at the 5-11 age range, and their parent or carer’s Smartphone.
As well as children, the device can also be used to help provide notification of the whereabouts of elderly and other vulnerable people.

Secured by Design member company, Mercury Glazing Supplies Ltd., has won a contract to supply their specialist sash windows to 200 homes in Brighton – a City with an illustrious history for South Coast fashion, elegance and style.
The company has been established as a specialist trade fabricator and supplier for 15 years. Their range includes PVC-u vertical sliders, PVC-u flush sash windows, timber vertical sliders, aluminium bi-fold doors and aluminium doors and windows. They are one of the UK’s biggest manufacturers of Spectus PVC-u vertical sliders, and along with being a Spectus approved window contractor have recently become an Excellence As Standard fabricator too.

Security specialist company Frontier Pitts has increased its range of products accredited by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.
Their Platinum Security range of sliding and bi-folding gates has achieved Loss Prevention Standard (LPS) 1175 Security Rating 2 & 3 from BRE Global’s Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) and comes after months of research and development.
Largest residential development in City of London is being built to Secured by Design standards
The largest residential development in London’s Square Mile on the site of St Bart’s Hospital, the oldest hospital in the country, has been designed to incorporate proven police crime prevention techniques into the built environment, such as the layout and landscaping, and into the physical security of buildings.
This security guidance has come from Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.
