First security standard for access control units in the UK announced on US company website
A new dedicated standard for access control systems for improved building access control in the UK was announced this month (January) by UL, a global safety science organisation, following close collaboration with Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.
UL 293 is the first security standard for access control equipment units in the UK.

Secured by Design member company, Heald Ltd, a global manufacturer and installer of hostile vehicle mitigation systems and traffic control solutions, has started 2018 in style – with the announcement of two major achievements.
The first is that their Managing Director, Debbie Heald, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List. The other is that one of company’s range of security products has been installed in the French Quarter of New Orleans, USA.
Ring creates the most expensive doorbell for charity
Secured by Design (SBD) Development Officer Doug Skins got within touching distance of the world’s most expensive doorbell when he attended a reception hosted by Ring, a pioneer in DIY outdoor smart home security products.
The SBD member company was displaying one of ten limited edition diamond, sapphire and gold-encrusted video doorbells at a reception for business contacts and the media in Soho on Tuesday, 21 November.
Winning students dig deep to come up with ‘brilliant’ crime prevention garden for prestigious 2018 show
Two mature students have won the opportunity to design and build a ‘crime prevention’ garden for display at next year’s Royal Horticultural Society’s Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, in a competition sponsored by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.
It will be the first time that a garden, which will incorporate proven techniques to deter opportunistic burglars, will have featured at this prestigious annual show, which runs from 2-8 July 2018.
SBD National Building Approval gathers pace with 3,000 buildings added over the last six months
An innovative scheme run by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, which makes it simpler, quicker and cheaper for companies and organisations commissioning construction work to include building security into all kinds of developments, is expanding quickly around the country.
A total of 6,494 buildings over 67 building sites have been registered with the SBD National Building Approval (SBD NBA) scheme – an increase of 3,000 buildings over the last six months.
Primary school development receives award for achieving Secured by Design crime prevention standards
A primary school development in Kilmarnock, Scotland, which brings together two schools on a new site, has been recognised for achieving high standards of security in its layout and landscaping as well as its physical security.
Secured by Design (SBD) trained Designing Out Crime Officers worked with architects Keppie Design (Glasgow), and Morrison Construction, a leading Scottish contractor, from the initial planning stage through to final construction to incorporate many proven crime prevention techniques into the £12.4million Whatriggs Primary School campus.

Police and Crime Commissioners receive tips on home security from Secured by Design
Security measures that can help protect your home and possessions from burglary were presented to 30 Police and Crime Commissioners in London on Wednesday, 1 November, by Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative.
The talk was introduced by SBD’s Chief Executive Officer, Guy Ferguson, who is a former Detective Chief Superintendent with the Metropolitan Police.
Taylor Wimpey receives SBD Gold Award for new homes at Estover, Plymouth
A Taylor Wimpey development of 68 homes in Plymouth has received a Gold Award from Secured by Design for incorporating crime prevention techniques into the landscaping and physical security of buildings.
The development at Cann Bridge Meadow, Estover, which was started in August 2016, will have 48 private and 20 affordable homes for rent or shared ownership when completed in December 2017.
